Bumstead Brings Bears 5-2 Win
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on June 23, 2008
NEWARK, NJ – An efficient pitching performance by starter Mike Bumstead carried the Bears to a 5-2 win over the Camden Riversharks at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Bumstead (6-5) pitched a season-high eight innings, giving up just four hits and one run. He struck out four and for the first time in twelve starts, he did not walk a batter. Cory Willey relieved Bumstead in the ninth but after recording two outs, he surrendered an RBI single to Ron Davenport to make the score 5-2. JJ Trujillo collected his sixth save of the season by striking out Richard Lewis to end the game.
Both teams scored early and were tied 1-1 at the end of the first inning. Gary Cates hit a lead off single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by LJ Biernbaum to put the Riversharks ahead. Then with two outs in the bottom of the inning, Cory Aldridge smacked an RBI single to even the score. This season, Aldridge is batting .556 with two outs and runners in scoring position.
With one out and the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Ramon Castro hit a 2-RBI single to put the Bears ahead 3-1. The Bears added two runs to their lead in the seventh on a double by Keith Reed to make the score 5-1.
Riversharks starter Chris Young (4-4) absorbed the loss, lasting six and one-third innings, and giving up five runs – four earned – with nine hits.
The Bears start a four-game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs tomorrow night with 7:05 game. Benito Baez (3-2) will take the mound for the Bears, facing Chris Gale (2-3).
