Revs Rally For Win
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on June 22, 2008
CENTRAL ISLIP, NY – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the York Revolution on Saturday 5-4 before a past-capacity crowd of 6,406 at Citibank Park.
The Revolution scored three times in the eighth inning to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead. Matt Esquivel clubbed his second straight RBI double off the wall in right to tie the game, and Tyler Von Schell and Jason Aspito followed with hits to bring home two more. The Ducks rallied in the bottom of the ninth, getting within one on Ray Navarrete’s RBI single. But Dave Veres held on for the save by getting Jay Gibbons to fly out to leftfield. P.J. Rose had two RBI in the effort for Long Island.
Both starters pitched well, but neither factored in the decision. Manny Ulloa worked six and one-third innings, allowing just one run on five hits with seven strikeouts before exiting with back spasms. Dave Gil also went six and one-third, but pitched through trouble more often by giving up ten hits and three runs, two of which were earned. Jason Olson (4-2) got the win with an two innings of hitless relief, while Jason Simontacchi (0-1) took the loss, allowing four hits and three runs – two earned – in the eighth. Veres recorded his fourth save of the season.
The Ducks wrap up their homestand with a 1:35 p.m. matinee on Sunday against York. The ballpark gates open at 12:35 p.m., and the first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive a yellow and blue souvenir baseball, courtesy of Yellow Dog Lawn Care. Fans will also be invited down onto the field for a pregame autograph session and postgame Kids Run the Bases, presented by Bethpage Federal Credit Union.
