NEWARK, NJ – A standout performance by catcher Jason Phillips proved to be too much for the Newark Bears as they fell to the Camden Riversharks 7-3 at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Saturday night.
Phillips went 2-4 with two home runs and collected four RBI on the night. His three-run shot in the third inning gave the ‘Sharks an early 3-0 lead.
The Bears got on board in the bottom of the fourth. Cory Aldridge reached base with a lead off walk, and he eventually scored on an RBI single by Gerard Haran to make the score 3-1. With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Bears reliever Steve Kent walked in two runs to extend the ‘Sharks lead to 5-2.
The Bears struck again the bottom of sixth, scoring one run on an RBI double by Haran, but Phillips hit his second home run of the game to give the Riversharks a 6-3 lead. The ‘Sharks scored once more in the eighth to create the 7-3 ¬¬¬¬final score.
The Riversharks’ Ryan Drese (6-1) picked up the win, pitching six innings and giving up three runs on nine hits. Bears starter Pat Stanley (6-1) absorbed the loss, giving up five runs on five hits in five innings of work. He also walked three and struck out six batters.
