Ducks Rally in Ninth, Gibbons Wins It in 14th
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on June 21, 2008
CENTRAL ISLIP, NY - The Long Island Ducks defeated the York Revolution on Friday 9-8X in 14 innings in front of a packed house of 6,502 at Citibank Park.
Jay Gibbons was the hero in the extra frames, providing a game-winning double in the 14th to score pinch runner Clint Nageotte from first base. Ray Navarrete hit his league-leading 14th home run in the fifth inning, and Alex Sanchez contributed with a two-run homer and a 3-for-7 night at the plate. York was paced by four solo homers, the last of which was a shot by Jason Aspito that gave the Revs an 8-7 lead in the ninth. But the Ducks got three hits to load the bases in the bottom of the inning, and Dennis Donovan scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and force extras.
Randy Leek pitched five and one-third innings for the Ducks, giving up five runs – four earned – on seven hits. Frank Castillo allowed four runs on seven hits in four in two-thirds innings. Neither starter factored in the decision. Jon Asahina and Abe Alvarez combined for five innings of scoreless relief in the extra sessions, with Alvarez (2-0) earning the win. Nick McCurdy went three scoreless innings for York before giving way to Heath Totten (0-1), who surrendered the game-winner to Gibbons.
The Ducks continue their series against York on Saturday with a 7:05 p.m. contest. The ballpark gates open at 6:05 p.m., and the first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive a neon green water bottle, courtesy of Purity First.
