Pats Complete Sweep of Riversharks

BRIDGEWATER, NJ – The Somerset Patriots defeated the Camden Riversharks 9-6 before 6,639 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Thursday night to complete the three game sweep.

The Riversharks scored first with a run in the top of the first inning.
Center fielder Nic Jackson walked, moved to second on a single, advanced to third on an error, and scored on an RBI single by designated hitter Josh Rabe.

Somerset answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game. Left fielder Michael Ryan walked and would later score on an RBI single by designated hitter Josh Pressley.

Somerset broke the game open with a seven run second inning for an 8-1 lead.
Right fielder Matt Hagen drew a walk, catcher Travis Anderson singled, and second baseman David Housel drew a walk to load the bases. Center fielder Elliott Ayala followed with an RBI infield single to score Hagen. Second baseman Gera Alvarez then drove in Anderson with an RBI single to keep the bases loaded. Ryan plated Housel on a bases loaded walk. Pressley then cleared the bases with a grand slam, his second of the season. The home run was Pressley’s fourth home run of the year.

Camden cut the lead to 8-4 with three runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Right fielder L.J. Biernbaum doubled and scored on an RBI single by first baseman Brett Bonvechio. Left fielder Ron Davenport followed with a two-run home run (2) to left field.

The Patriots extended the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning on a solo home run by Hagen (2) for a 9-4 lead.

The Riversharks scored in the top of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly and in the top of the ninth on a solo home run by Jackson (2). Patriots starter Steve Kelly (3-2) picked up the win, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in seven innings pitched. Camden starter Vince Perkins (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing eight earned runs on five hits and six walks in two innings pitched.

The 2008 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Thursday, June 5th when the Patriots return to Commerce Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 pm game against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. The game kicks off Commerce Bank Ballpark’s 10th Anniversary Celebration with Ballpark Posters for the first 2,000 fans in attendance, courtesy of Barefoot Wine. The game is also NASCAR Night and Celebrate NJ Night.
