Bluefish Take Game on More Late Inning Heroics

BRIDGEPORT, CT -The Bridgeport Bluefish made it a habit this week of staying pesky at the plate, especially late in the game. Bridgeport battled back from deficits all series long with different outcomes. The outcome on Thursday night was a 4-3 win over the Newark Bears thanks to a three run eighth inning. The Bluefish split the series with the Bears and move to 16-17 on the season.
Newark starter Matt Sweeney cruised through most of the game, scattering Bluefish hits over his first seven innings. The Bluefish bats finally put together a string of runners together when Sweeney walked the first two men in the eighth before being relieved by Rich Scalamandre. Luis Lopez drove in his 24th and 25th runs on the season off Scalamandre to tie the game at three. The Bluefish infielder crossed the plate on a Calvin Pickering sacrifice fly to make the game 4-3. Scalamandre is charged with the loss going .1 innings with one hit and one walk while allowing the go-ahead run to score.
Sweeney finished with seven plus innings, allowing three runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
Eric DuBose put together a nice start with just two bad pitches leading to his three runs allowed. The Bluefish southpaw went 7.1 innings allowing six hits with five walks and five strikeouts. Jeff Tam got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the eighth to earn the win. Wes Wilkerson gave up two hits in the ninth but was able to get Cory Aldridge, who homered earlier, to fly out to earn his sixth save of the season.
Travis Ezi got things started for Bridgeport leading off the game with a triple and scoring two runs with one steal. Bears shortstop Ramon Castro continued to dominate Bluefish pitching with his third home run in the series only three pitches into the contest. Aldridge and Jose Herrera both extended their hit streaks to a staggering 19 games.
The Bluefish welcome the Camden Riversharks to town for a three-game weekend series. Matt Pike makes his third start of the season on Friday for the ‘Fish opposed by Darren Sack of Camden.
