By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on May 27, 2008
BRIDGEPORT, CT – The Bridgeport Bluefish had the lead in hand heading into the 7th inning but was unable to hang on for the victory as they lost to the Newark Bears 11-6 Monday. The Bluefish pitching staff worked themselves in and out of jams all night but in the end the Bears offensive attack was too much. The Bluefish drop to 14-16 on the season with the loss.
The Bluefish 6-5 lead was erased by three runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth, capped by a two-run homer by Val Majewksi. Majewski was 2-4 on the night with three RBIs and a run. Ramon Castro and Brian Burgamy also added two hits adna home run a piece on the evening.
The Bluefish bats were quiet until the fourth inning when they sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs. Calvin Pickering and Brian Munhall both cranked two-run shots in the inning to contribute. Munhall and Luis Lopez notched the only multi-hit performances for Bridgeport with two base knocks each.
Matt Pike took advantage of his second spot start and pitched well. The righty went 5.1 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits with four walks and a strikeout. Jeff Tam (0-1) helped Pike get out of a bases loaded jam with an inning ending double play in the sixth but then gave the lead back to the Bears in the following inning to take the loss. Pat Stanley (3-0) worked the win for Newark, going six innings and allowing eight hits and six runs (five earned) while walking three and striking out six.
Bridgeport will try to rebound with game two of four tomorrow night. Barry Hertzler will head to the hill for the Bluefish and will be opposed by Mike Bumstead.
